8 Settlements With a Population of Just One Person


1. Buford, Wyoming, USA

The only resident: Don Sammons
Buford is an unincorporated community in Albany County, Wyoming, United States. It is located between Laramie and Cheyenne on Interstate 80. Buford is at 8000 feet (2500 m) of elevation, making it the highest community on Interstate 80. It has a population of 1 person. Don Sammons, who is the only resident, is also the operator of the Buford Trading Post. His son moved out around 2008.



2. Monowi, Nebraska, USA

The only resident: Elsie Eiler
Monowi's peak years were in the 1930s, when it had a population of 150. Like many other small communities in the Great Plains, it lost its younger residents to cities that were experiencing growth and offering better jobs. During the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 2; only one married couple, Rudy and Elsie Eiler, lived there. Mr. Eiler died in 2004, leaving his wife as the only remaining resident. In this capacity, she acts as Mayor, granting herself a liquor license and paying taxes to herself. She is required to produce a municipal road plan every year in order to secure state funding for the village's four street lights.

The only resident: Barrie Drummond
Cass is a locality in the Selwyn District of the Canterbury region in New Zealand's South Island. It is named for Thomas Cass, an important pioneer surveyor in the area. State Highway 73 passes near the town. Since November 1987, the world-famous TranzAlpine passenger train has run through the town. It is one of the few places in the world with apopulation of one resident. The only resident of this village is Barrie Drummond.

4. Rochefourchat, France

Rochefourchat is a commune in the Drôme department in the Rhône-Alpes region in southeastern France. In the commune there is a single house, a converted barn, and the ruins of an old castle. The nearest communes to Rochefourchat are Saint-Nazaire-le-Désert, Les Tonils, Pradelle, and Brette. There is only one permanent inhabitant, a 38-year old divorced man called Jean-Baptiste Lully, making it the least populous French commune.

5. Bonanza, Utah, USA

Bonanza is a census-designated place in southeastern Uintah County, in eastern Utah, United States. The name refers to a rich mineral strike. Near the community is a coal fired power plant owned by Deseret Power Electric Cooperative. Bonanza is also in the area of the Colorado Plateau where oil drilling and extraction takes place from oil shale and other fossil fuel deposits. According to the 2010 Census, there is one person residing at this location.

6. Laurier, Washington, USA

Laurier, Washington is a small town in Ferry County, Washington state that neighbors the Canadian border. According to the 2010 Census, there was one person residing at this location. Also, Avey Field (located at Laurier) is a unique airport which straddles the United States and Canadian border. Both U.S. and Canadian customs are conveniently located on the highway adjacent to the parking area.

7. Hobart Bay, Alaska, USA

Hobart Bay is a census-designated place located in Hoonah-Angoon Census Area, Alaska. As of the 2010 Census, the population of this settlement was one. The bay was named in 1889 by Lt. Commander Mansfield of the U. S. Navy. The site was first settled as a logging camp. The population has declined in recent years and it would probably not be incorporated as a town with the present population.

Oil Springs Reservation is an Indian reservation of the Seneca tribe located in New York, USA. It is divided between two counties: Allegany County and Cattaraugus County. As of thecensus of 2010, one person lives on the reservation, residing in the Allegany County portion of the reservation. This person is a Native American.
